Why We Adopted European Privacy Standards for Everyone (Even in Ohio)
Why We Adopted European Privacy Standards for Everyone (Even in Ohio)
(The Gold Standard of Digital Rights)
The European Union has a reputation in the tech world. Depending on who you ask, they are either the "fun police" or the "guardians of the galaxy."
When it comes to digital data, they are definitely the guardians.
Laws like the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and the Digital Markets Act mandate that European users have radical rights over their data:
- Right to Portability: They must be able to download their data and move to a competitor.
- Right to Erasure: They must be able to delete their data permanently.
- Right to Access: They must be able to see exactly what companies know about them.
Most US companies treat these laws as a nuisance. They do the bare minimum to comply for their users in Paris or Berlin, while continuing to treat their users in Ohio or Texas with the lower standards allowed by US law.
We decided to do the opposite.
The "Highest Bar" Philosophy
At Flour Power, we made a global decision: We apply the strictest European data rights to every single user, regardless of where they live.
If you live in Des Moines, Iowa, you have the same data protections as a diplomat in Brussels.
Why? Because we believe these aren't just "regulatory burdens" --they are human rights.
Why Digital Rights are Human Rights
Your digital life is real life.
Your recipe collection isn't just "content." It is your labor. It is your creativity. It is your family history.
If a company can lock you out of your labor, or spy on your family history, they are violating your property rights.
By adopting the European standard globally, we are making a statement: Geography should not determine your dignity.
What This Means for You
Here is what "GDPR for Everyone" looks like in practice inside the Flour Power app:
1. The "Download Everything" Button
Under EU law, portability must be "easy and machine-readable." So, we built export tools that give you your recipes in standard formats like JSON-LD and PDF. Your recipe data is yours to take wherever you want.
2. The "Right to be Forgotten"
If you leave Flour Power, you can request full account deletion. We don't just deactivate your login; we permanently remove your data from our servers. When you delete individual recipes, we keep them for 90 days as a safety net against accidental deletion, then permanently remove them. When you delete your account, everything goes immediately. We don't hold onto it "for analytics." It is your property, and you have taken it with you.
3. Informed Consent
You know those annoying cookie pop-ups? They exist because of EU law. But the principle behind them is sound: You should know what is happening.
We don't bury data practices in 50 pages of legalese. We tell you, in plain English, what data we need (e.g., "We need your location to find local grocery stores for the shopping list") and we ask your permission. If you say no, the app still works (just without that specific feature).
Future-Proofing Your Rights
The other benefit of adopting the "Highest Bar" is stability.
Privacy laws are changing everywhere. California has the CCPA. Brazil has the LGPD. Canada has PIPEDA. The world is moving toward the European model.
By voluntarily adopting the strictest standards now, Flour Power is future-proof. We won't have to scramble to change our features when a new privacy law passes in your state. We are already compliant. We are already safe.
Global Standards for Local Kitchens
We believe that a home cook in Ohio deserves the same respect as a home cook in France.
We believe that your kitchen data is personal property, and that property rights shouldn't stop at the border.
By adopting global standards voluntarily, we are building a platform that respects you not because the law forces us to, but because it’s the right thing to do.
Your kitchen is your sovereign territory. We are just guests. And we intend to be the best guests you’ve ever had.
