Cook With Step-by-Step Timers Built In
You are cooking from a recipe on your phone. You hit a step that says "simmer for 12 minutes." So you open the timer app, type in 12 minutes, start it, go back to the recipe. Three steps later, bake for 25 minutes. Same thing.
By the end you have four or five separate timers, each disconnected from the step it was for, and you are no longer sure which is for the chicken and which is for the sauce.
The recipe knew about these durations. It could have set up the timers itself. It did not, because the recipe app and the timer app are not talking to each other.
How it should work
A recipe app with proper cooking session support does the timing for you.
When you start cooking, the app reads the steps. Steps with durations have timers attached. You tap a step to mark it complete. The timer starts. It counts down in the corner of the screen. When it finishes, the app makes a noise, you advance to the next step, the next timer is queued.
You are not switching apps. You are not retyping durations. You are not trying to remember which of three running timers is the chicken.
This is not a futuristic feature. It is what cooking should always have looked like when the recipe lives on a screen.
Timer in recipe vs. cooking session
A lot of apps now offer in-recipe timers. The quality varies.
The basic version puts a "tap to start" button next to any step with a number-of-minutes mention. Fine, but it does not really change the cooking experience. You still manage the session in your head, remember which step you are on, scroll up and down, chase timers when they fire.
The better version is a real cooking session. The current step is large and prominent. The next step is queued. Completed steps are crossed out. Active timers are visible. The screen stays on. The session model is the difference between an app that "supports" timers and an app that helps you cook.
Why per-step matters
The argument against per-step timers is that they are overkill. You only really need one or two per recipe. This is not how cooking works.
A typical recipe has more durations than people realize. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes. Cook for 4 minutes per side. Simmer for 20. Let cool for 5 before serving. Each affects the dish if you mismanage it.
The 5-minute cool you forgot is the cool that means the sauce did not thicken. The 4-minute-per-side you guessed at is the chicken that came out raw in the middle. The 10-minute rest you skipped is the dough that fought you for the entire roll-out.
Ordinary weeknight failures. Most of them are because the cook lost track of a duration the recipe already specified.
Step-by-step timers do not turn you into a better cook. They just make sure the durations the recipe gave you are honored.
The hands-free question
If your hands are covered in flour, you need a way to advance the step without smearing the screen. Voice control is one answer. Large tap targets are another. The honest caveat
Built-in timers do not stop you from forgetting to defrost the chicken yesterday. They do not stop the smoke alarm when you walk away from the broiler. They do not turn a bad recipe into a good one.
What they do solve is the small, repeated act of timing. They take a tax you were paying every time you cooked, and they remove it. The phone is not a separate timer device anymore. It is the recipe, with the timers built in.
